BLAST FROM THE PAST

Playlist and Introduction by Ciara Healy In the late 80’s I was an undergraduate at a university in Nebraska. When I saw the call fo DJs at the college radio station, I jumped at the chance. Literally, there were two turntables and a microphone, as well as a tape deck. Singles often came on cassettes. The station was a carrier current and was mostly heard on the small campus. I didn’t have a car, so I cannot attest to the reach of the station. The older students who ran the station were super intimidating if only because they had experience and projected a “run the gauntlet” attitude toward training new DJs. There was no pizza at the first DJ meeting. Rough, right? After learning how to work the board and follow the directions to stay on the right side of the FCC, I was off. Mostly, my immediate circle of friends listened to my show. Sometimes people called in with requests. Sometimes weirdos called passing along their weirdness. Sometimes there were promotions or tickets to shows on offer. Remarkably, College radio has not changed as much as one might think that that long span of years. I felt very sophisticated when I played a track from a Laibach LP on the recommendation of an Austrian exchange student. The band is Slovenian and kinda death-metal. Punk crossover, heavy on the political innuendo. Had no idea what they were singing in German. Laibach’s still going strong, by the way. The station was in a bit of a tailspin and the hard ass older students were trying to pull it back from the brink. I convinced a friend of mine to stage a protest and lock themselves into the control room to draw attention to the plight of the station. It did not go over well. I stuck by my friend through their disciplinary hearing and frankly punitive actions on the part of the uni’s administration as well as the administration attempting to convince my friend that their mental health was in question. They transferred away from the university the next academic year. It was a real turning point. The radio station closed the next year. In the soft glow of nostalgia and the harsh light of youthful folly, I offer you this Spotify playlist…with some updates.   https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0xJmr9qaxCg24dLgE4hPC5?si=0gHb1hYNTVO-zV-iLCx8ww

WXDU Public Statement

WXDU stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and those protesting across the country. We are devastated by the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other lives harmed by police brutality and white supremacist violence. We condemn all forms of racial injustice and white supremacy that continuously hurt the Black community, and we recognize this struggle for equality is an ongoing one. We exist in a nation where systemic oppression is deeply rooted, and it is important that even as time passes by, we keep the fight against white supremacy and racism at the forefront of our collective consciousness. As a media organization, WXDU serves to promote the arts and inform, educate, and entertain both the Duke and surrounding Durham communities through radio programming. We are committed to actively using our platform to spread awareness and amplify marginalized voices by sharing outlets for action and education--petitions, bail funds, abolition resources, places/organizations to donate to--and continuing to highlight Black music and culture on our website, airtime, and social media pages. WXDU stands by our core values of diversity and inclusion, and hopes to further conversations surrounding race, privilege, and inequality. We encourage our audience to engage in them as well. These past weeks have shown that there is no “normal” for us to return to. What we’ve let slide in our society was and is not normal. There needs to be a great deal of change directed at creating all-inclusive, equal spaces, and that includes acknowledging, advocating for, and acting to defund the police. It is our responsibility to help make this change happen and last in our local communities.
